Hippocrites (an ancient Greek physician) claimed that all disease begins in the gut and likewise Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine has known the same for thousands of years. More recently a British doctor, Dr. Campbell-McBride (who is the author of Gut And Psychology Syndrome - GAPS) ended her son's autism and is helping many more children with ADHD and behaviour issues.  With this recent research and amazing results, if your child suffers with the above it is most certainly worth reviewing your child's food plan and more importantly their probiotic status (friendly bacteria).

The GAPS spectrum includes autism, ADHD, dyspraxia, and depression, to name but a few and significantly relies upon the intestinal flora of the gut. This may depend upon what is passed on from birth, foods such as dairy and meats tainted with antibiotics and antibiotics themselves; all of which affect the intestinal flora and why probiotics are so important. 80% of the human immune system relies on the friendly good bacteria in the colon. A damaged intestinal flora can also produce physical symptoms such as asthma, allergies and eczema signalling a damaged immune system.

Children with hyperactivity and ADHD seem particularly sensitive to sugar, so it is wise to remove all forms of refined sugar from the diet and any foods that contain it. Replace with whole foods and complex carbohydrates (brown rice and other whole grains, oats, lentils, beans, quinoa and vegetables). Processed ‘juices’ should also be avoided because these deliver a large amount of sugar very quickly. No added sugar drinks which contain artificial sweeteners are particular 'triggers' affecting the neurotransmitters in the brain. You can further improve their blood sugar balance by making sure carbohydrates are eaten with protein (half as much protein as carbohydrates at every meal and snack). Two easy examples are eating nuts or seeds with fruit, or fish with rice.

In addition to taking a probiotic supplement, a natural way to ensure an intake of good bacteria is through high fermented foods such as Kefir, Kombucha, Sauerkraut and natural yoghurt with live cultures (if tolerable).
