The body does not distinguish between actual stress or anxious emotions and thoughts; many clients I see live a stress-filled life full of constant emotional and mental stress and distress and an excessive amount of “busy-ness” with a lack relaxation and quality sleep.

Exhausted adrenals (the stress glands) affects a large percent of clients and cause a multitude of health problems, from exhaustion and weight gain to decreased immune function. Additionally, adrenal depletion via stress can result in mood disorders, depression, insomnia, high blood pressure, fibromyalgia, hypothyroid and many more issues.

The adrenal glands are two walnut-sized glands located above each kidney. They are the control centre for many hormones including cortisol and adrenaline. Cortisol is produced in response to stressors such as pain and inflammation, glycaemic control (blood sugar) and psychological overload.

The primary role of the adrenal glands is to control energy levels and keep you alive during stressful events. Studies have shown that for every minute you experience stress, it takes 60 minutes to remove the flood of adrenal stress hormones from the bloodstream. Chronic stress creates a continuous production of cortisol which in turn imbalances insulin and many other hormones.

The majority of individuals suffering with weak adrenal function don't realise that adrenal insufficiency is the underlying cause of their symptoms, or that they can heal and restore their health naturally.  For vibrant health, hormone and emotional balance, prioritising the health and function of the adrenals is vital. Adrenal burnout is almost entirely caused by a high-stress lifestyle and poor foods. Initially, you must ensure your blood sugar is stable and your digestive system is in balance to overcome adrenal fatigue so a diet high in magnesium and B vitamins is essential.

The SRT (Stress Related Therapy) System in clinic screens your body for a Full Health MOT to confirm how you deal with stress, absorb vitamins and minerals and find the best solution as to how we re-balance your adrenals. In my health screening practice I see many clients with ‘allergies’ and ‘sensitivities’ which one assumes are related to foods, animals or pollens. In a large majority of cases there are other external stressors which affect the human immune system and are often found in the home. I have listed four of the most common below:

Mold and other Fungal Toxins: One in three people have had an allergic reaction to mold. Mycotoxins (fungal toxins) can cause a range of health problems with exposure to only a small amount. Exposure has been linked to many respiratory, sinus and skin issues and sources generally come from contaminated buildings, foods like nuts, wheat, and corn. Ensure your home is mold free; soak nuts and seeds; wash fruit well and avoid GM wheat and corn.

Pesticides: According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), 60% of herbicides, 90% of fungicides and 30% of insecticides are known to be carcinogenic. Pesticide residues have been detected in 50-95% of foods. This is one of the reasons to buy organic foods or alternatively ensure you wash and scrub your fruit and vegetables well. Also take care with drinking water and ensure you filter tap water.

Plastics / PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) / Bisphonol A: Although banned in the UK for decades, it is still present in your environment. Farm raised fish are often heavily contaminated with PCBs so eat wild caught fish. Store your food and beverages in glass rather than plastic, and avoid using plastic wrap and canned foods (which are often lined with BPA-containing liners). Certainly do not heat foods or microwave using plastic. Aim to buy BPA free water bottles and storage if you cannot find glass.

Volatile Organic Compounds: VOCs are a major air pollutant. According to the EPA, VOCs tend to be even higher (two to five times) in indoor air than outdoor air, likely because they are present in so many household products such as drinking water, deodorants, air fresheners and cosmetics. Dangers of exposure include respiratory tract irritation, headaches, dizziness, visual disorders, and memory impairment.
